Jon Charles, Managing Director. Jon has worked nearly two decades in the liner shipping business and brings a wealth of Asia Pacific and European experience to the Mizzen Group.
His most recent role was leading the Regional Corporate Planning department of NYK Line in Oceania, having previously held positions in Trade Management for NYK Line and CP Ships.
He holds a BSc (Hons) in International Transport from Cardiff University of Wales, a Masters of Accounting from Sydney University and is a CPA.
Dr Alan Taylor, Chairman & co-founder. Alan has a background as a scientist, investment banker, entrepreneur and investor. He is currently very active in the Australian start-up area, investing in, advising and taking an active role within a number of early stage companies. Alan is currently the Chairman and co-founder of Mizzen Group Pty Ltd, a new technology start-up company in the transport and logistics area.
Alan is also the the Executive Chairman at Clarity Pharmaceuticals, a company focused on developing radiopharmaceuticals for the treatment of cancer and other diseases. Alan is passionate about the commercialisation of Australian science and technologies, either in general technology or the life sciences.
Alan has approximately 10 years of investment banking experience, and was until recently an Executive Director and shareholder of Inteq Limited, a boutique Australian investment bank, where he remains on the Board of Directors. Alan has significant experience in capital raisings, mergers and acquisitions, and general corporate advisory. He has experience across a broad range of industries including healthcare and life sciences, technology, and resources. Alan is also a lecturer at the University of Sydney, lecturing to Masters of Commerce and International Business students undertaking studies in New Business Opportunities and Start-ups.
Alan completed an undergraduate degree in Applied Science at the University of Sydney, where he finished first in his year and won the prestigious University Medal. He completed his Ph.D. in Medicine at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, where he investigated the molecular mechanisms of skeletal muscle insulin resistance. Alan has also completed a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance at the Securities Institute of Australia.
Llew Russell, AM, Director. Llew is a 42 year veteran of the public and private transport, trade and logistics industries. In 2009 he became a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to the shipping and transport logistics industries, for his development and promotion of trade opportunities, and his professional associations.
Mr Russell has spent 30 years as head of industry associations, 12 years in government and on numerous not-for-profit (NFP) boards. He is highly skilled in corporate strategies/governance, including risk analysis, understanding of and responsibility for financial outcomes, and regulation in the maritime, overseas trade and logistics industries. Furthermore, his NFP board experience has also involved chambers of commerce, the IT Industry, training, education and seafarer charity boards.
He has been successful in working with federal, state and territory ministers, departments and regulatory agencies. He has actively engaged with all areas of the media and has had extensive overseas experience in both Industry and government sectors.
Dominique Burgess, Executive Director & co-founder. Dominique has 25-years experience in the freight forwarding industry. She has worked for both the larger NVOCC's and small to medium sized freight forwarders, and has an extensive understanding in all aspects of air, sea, import and export freight.
Together with a high attention to detail and a passion for delivering exceptional customer service she has lead specialised projects within the film, music, medical and defence industries, assisting both clients and Australian Customs with their particular requirements for their general, hazardous and time sensitive goods.
Having lived and worked both in Australia and overseas successfully managing various teams, Dominique has since used her vast experience to consult in the freight industry assisting companies to streamline their systems for better efficiency and sustainability, leading to improved profitability.
In seeing the need for greater congruency between technology and the shipping and freight industries Dominique is currently an Executive Director and co-founder of Mizzen Group Pty Ltd, a new technology start-up company in the transport and logistics area.
Ian Warrington, CTO & co-founder. Ian is a specialist in engineering large-scale online marketplaces. He has helped design and develop some of the largest and most innovative digital marketplaces in Australia & Asia. Ian is currently the CTO and co-founder of Mizzen Group Pty Ltd, a new technology start-up developing an online marketplace for the shipping and freight forwarding industry.
Ian spent 6 years at Fairfax Media, where he was the technical lead for their high profile online motoring and real estate websites, building the search engine for Domain.com.au, and the web services powering the mobile and tablet apps.
Subsequently Ian became an early member of the Australian start-up Brandscreen, a high frequency trading platform for online advertising. Eventually assuming the role of Head of Engineering for APAC, Ian and his team developed the first real-time bidding platform in the Asia-Pacific region, processing over 100,000 transactions per second.
In addition to leadership roles Ian is also an enthusiastic teacher; Ian has lectured on software development at UTS, and spoken on various topics to meetup groups around Sydney.
Justin Brown, Commercial Director. Justin has over 26 years of commercial logistics experience. His career spans commercial roles at shipping lines, airlines and international forwarding businesses.
Justin was formerly the Business Development Manager at NYK Line, a leading Japanese carrier. In that role he worked on APAC business development, client relationships and decision making that was imperative to organisational revenue growth, success and profitability.
He has an extensive industry network because of his experience procuring, implementing and securing logistics contracts for numerous government and private sector organisations.
Justin wants to see the logistics industry build modern digital practices such as those that mizzenit.com will provide. He is passionate about helping the industry building the digital skills that they will need over the coming years.
Darren Burden, Executive Director & co-founder. Darren has a background in all aspects of building commercial digital media products. He has worked in strategy, commercial, product and technology roles for the largest publisher in Australia & New Zealand, Fairfax Media.
Since leaving Fairfax Media in 2013 he has been consulting to household media brands to help drive digital innovation and change within those organisations.
Darren has a diverse 18 years of digital experience including the General Manager role of the digital news brands, his teams built and managed the largest online news brands in Australia, smh.com.au & theage.com.au. He was deeply involved with launching two new digital brands into Australian markets, watoday.com.au & brisbanetimes.com.au, as well as working across many tablet, mobile, website and video platform launches.
Darren is a Sulzberger Fellow, an executive transformation and change management course, held at Columbia University, New York, and a recent alumni of Ash Maurya’s Bootstart program for entrepreneurs.
Therese Walker, eBusiness Director. Therese has over 15 years experience in the container industry. While working for five of the biggest global shipping lines she has gained extensive experience in eBusiness, complex reporting and systems integration.
Her most recent role was as Oceania Business Process Manager with NYK Line. Whilst the title was Oceania she took on more of global management position looking after various project teams through systems and process change.
Therese was also an integral member in the global centre of excellence team, whose main focus was on designing reports for the customers and the company, ensuring NYK were not only exceeding customer requirements but also that the business was running at optimal level.
She is an experienced software and eBusiness manager. She has driven eBusiness promotion, software implementation, customer success, third party integration and enterprise IT rollouts in a variety of positions held with Contship, CP Ships, Hapag-Lloyd and NYK Line.
Being involved in the technology side of container shipping for so long she can see how embracing and utilising technology can increase efficiency and reduce operation costs, in turn supporting the successful future of the shipping industry.
